When You Should Visit
an Obstetrician
If you are visiting an obstetrician for a prenatal visit, the doctor will review your medical history with you. They will also perform a physical and a pelvic exam. They may prescribe prenatal supplements or recommend specific lifestyle changes as you prepare your body for pregnancy. The focus of this visit is to ensure you are in good health and to answer any questions you may have about fertility and pregnancy.
If you are pregnant and are visiting an obstetrician for pregnancy care, the doctor will provide individualized care tailored to you and your baby. Everyone will schedule appointments to best fit their individual needs. Still, you can generally expect to visit the obstetrician every four weeks until you are 28 weeks pregnant, every two weeks until 36 weeks, and then every week until labor and delivery.
Pregnancy care visits might include a medical history review, a physical exam, a pelvic exam, on-site ultrasounds, blood and urine tests, and more. During these visits, your doctor can also help you calculate your due date and answer any questions you might have.
